As a podcast host, I can engage in enlightening conversations with various experts. Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Leah Morrison, a trauma educator, coach, and healer. Our conversation was insightful and deeply personal as we delved into the topic of trauma, its impact on individuals and communities, and the journey toward healing.
Lea Morrison is a remarkable individual who has dedicated her life to bridging the gap between therapists and the coaching and wellness industry. Her journey towards reclaiming her well-being after childhood trauma led her to her current career. As we began our conversation, I couldn't help but acknowledge the crisis happening in Leah's community due to a recent wildfire, the McDougall wildfire, which has displaced many people in Kelowna, British Columbia.
Natural disasters, like the wildfire in Lea's community or the recent hurricane in California, can cause collective trauma. Lea explained that trauma encompasses big and small events, often called "big T" and "small T" traumas. She opened up about her personal experience with trauma and its impact on her mental health, leading to feelings of hopelessness and deep shame.
I believe it's crucial to normalize these feelings and spread awareness about available resources and support for those struggling with mental health issues. Trauma can affect the brain's ability to function optimally, leading to difficulties in problem-solving and making sense of things. It's like using dial-up internet instead of high-speed internet. The stigma and self-shame that often accompany these struggles further hinder one's ability to think clearly and seek help.
Lea shared her vision for the future, which includes launching a trauma-aware practitioner certification program. This program aims to provide wellness practitioners, coaches, and therapists with the tools and knowledge to support their clients better.
I encourage everyone to connect with Lea, explore her work, and show support. You can find more about her and her programs on her website.
Also, consider supporting organizations like Mamas for Mamas in Lea's community. Let's continue to spread awareness, support each other, and work towards healing from trauma.
